Three judges of Pakistan’s Lahore High Court received threatening letters on Wednesday. A suspicious powder was also found inside these letters. The judges who received the letter include Justice Shujaat Ali Khan, Justice Shahid Bilal Hasan and Justice Aliya Neelam. The Court Registrar Office has confirmed this.
Earlier on Tuesday, six judges of Islamabad High Court had also received threatening letters containing suspicious powder. The judges complained about this to Supreme Court Chief Justice (CJP) Qazi Faiz Isa.
Senior officials of Lahore Police and Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) reached Lahore High Court and took possession of the letters and started investigation. After this incident, the security of the judges of Lahore High Court has been increased.
The police have also detained the employee of the courier company who delivered the letter and have taken him to an unknown place for questioning. Punjab Police spokesperson said that the white powder could be anthrax. The powder is sent for laboratory testing to determine whether it is anthrax.
The Supreme Court has taken cognizance of the issue of judges receiving threatening letters. A seven-member bench has been formed under the chairmanship of CJP Isa. This bench will hear the cases of judges of Islamabad High Court. These judges accused intelligence agencies including ISI of interfering in judicial matters.
